I have new experience with this particular annoyance in that I just recently got braces: yesterday, in fact. And right now, I am in pain. My mouth hurts like nothing else, and it feels like each tooth has been whacked with a hammer. I can't allow my top teeth to touch my bottom teeth or pain will shoot through the tooth--which, by the way, is bone, so it kind of upsets me that it hurts at all--and my gum.
But it gets worse, because when the dentists emphasizes the importance of brushing and flossing after every meal, as if I don't go to school or anything. Brushing right now is painful; flossing is agonizing. I am hitting my sore tooth repeatedly and sawing through my gums. I can't eat anything either because I can't chew, so I skipped dinner yesterday, I skipped breakfast this morning, and I'm skipping lunch right now. I might even skip dinner tonight if the pain doesn't go away. My doctor would have an aneurysm.
Anyway, I get that in the long term it's worth it, but right now all I feel is the pain in my mouth. Because my mouth is not used to metal, it's protesting as much as possible. Plus, the braces are chafing against the inside of my cheeks, and if it causes an ulcer, so help me I will scream. Braces are useful and "worth it," true, but the initial pain and self-consciousness that comes with it is difficult to deal with.
Most people today have had braces, especially teenagers. And I think all of us can agree that braces are one thing firmly in the top tier of annoyances.
